The Camel and the Pomegranate Tree
In a small village, lived a very poor man, who was in such a need that he could not support his own family. He decided to travel to another village, which, he heard, was rich and has lots of job opportunities. But his children were too young and have no one to look after them. Since he knew his neighbor was a good and honest man, he asked him to take care of his children and in returned the poor man would share whatever he earn from working abroad with the neighbor. The neighbor, who was not in a better condition agreed. '' Put your trust on Allah as you put it on to look after your children. I want you to be patient and careful. Take care of yourself,'' said the neighbor.
The man walked through mountains and deserts until he reached that village. He saw plants and trees everywhere. Herds of sheep and camels were eating and drinking water from its falajes.
The asked around for a job and the people of the village told him to go to the rich merchant and asks for a job. The man did as told and the merchant asked him," What kind of job can you do?''
''I will do my best in whatever job you ask me to do,'' answered the poor man. The merchant thought for a moment. ''I want you to look after a camel of mine. It always stays under a pomegranate tree as if guarding it. If anyone comes near the tree, the camel attacks him and kills him. It killed already 99 men. If you could tame this camel and discover the secret behind it behavior, I will reward you generously and give you a job,'' said the merchant.
The man thought about this. '' It is a dangerous and a difficult job but if I did it, I will guaranty the future of my children.'' So he decided to follow his neighbor advice and put his trust on Allah and do his best.
The poor man kept watching the camel every day. He learned from the other workers that the pomegranate tree stays green all year but it never gives any fruits. They said also that the camel sets under it and kill anyone who would come near it.
The man was bewildered but he remembered his children and his neighbor. So he decided to try his luck one day. Slowly, he approached the pomegranate tree and turned around the camel. The camel was watching him carefully. Suddenly, it attacked the man when he was close. The man ran for his life and climbed up the tree. The camel calmed down and went back to his spot under the tree. Everyone was surprised. The man started to climb down the tree when he saw a big pomegranate fruit hidden between the leaves. He grabbed it and went down.
The merchant heard about what happened and asked the man about it. ''I ran to the pomegranate tree and found this fruit,'' said the man. The merchant was bewildered and decided to hire the man to discover the secret.
The poor man was so happy and bought some goods and sent them to his neighbor to share them between the two families. When the neighbor cut the pomegranate fruit open, jewels fall out of it. He was astonished and did not know what to do with it. Then he decided to buy to the two families what they need with the jewels and invest the rest of it for his neighbor.
Time passed on and another pomegranate season began. The camel sat as usual under the same tree. The man approached it again and climbed up the tree when the camel attacked him. He noticed a big pomegranate fruit, while climbing down and took it. The camel did nothing to him. The man sent the fruit with some money to his neighbor, who again found a lot of jewels inside it. This time he built a big house for the poor man's children and a land that he planted with different trees and hired gardeners to take care of it. He sold the crops and in shops he built for his friend. He did not touch the incomes of the land and used only his share from what his friend sent to support his own family.
Another year passed on and the same thing happened as the previous year. The man asked for permission from the merchant to leave after working hard for three years. '' You stopped the strange camel from killing another man, therefore, I want to thank you for your good attitude and reward you for your honesty,'' said the merchant.
The merchant gave him a great convoy loaded with food, clothes, and jewels to do whatever he wants with it. The man was so happy and imagined how happy his family will be, so he thanked the merchant for his generosity and asked Allah to overwhelm him with His grace.
The man ran to his house when he reached his village, but, to his surprise he found a huge house and a beautiful farm. He asked people about his children and neighbor and they told him that the huge house is his and his neighbor's house is behind it as it always was. The man went to his neighbor who welcomed him happily and answered all his questions with two words'' pomegranate fruit. ''
''Pomegranate fruit,'' said the man amazingly. His neighbor asked his to cut open the one he brought with him. Jewels fall out of it and the man realized the secret of the camel, which was guarding the pomegranate.
The man also realized what his trustworthy neighbor had done to his family. '' Oh my good neighbor how could you forget yourself and your family from this wealth? This convoy I came with is all yours for your honesty and half my money is yours too for your Municipality,'' said the man.
The neighbor was thrilled with his friend generosity and they lived happily ever after.
